Reasons to Buy a Home in Oshawa

March 24, 2014 - Updated: March 24, 2014

It’s easy to get stuck in the thought that Oshawa is just the place where General Motors is, and while that is true there is a lot more to it.  Oshawa is the largest urban centre in Durham Region and with a population in the 150,000 range, there is always something to do.

There are also a lot of reasons to consider homes for sale in Oshawa, if you’re in the search phase or plan to be in the near future.

The Neighbourhoods

GO Train service runs between Oshawa and Toronto several times a day, plus highways 401 and 407 are available for driving, so anyone working in Toronto has a clear path everyday.  Oshawa offers several different neighbourhoods with a large variety of homes covering many budgets.

Throughout the city, you’ll find Tudor and Edwardian homes, split-levels, ranch bungalows, rental apartments, working class single-family homes and scores of modern, contemporary dwellings.  Most of the new developments are in the northeast part of the city, but the south part of town is also experiencing some new construction.

Oshawa has more than 30 elementary schools, 6 secondary schools, almost 20 separate schools and high quality post-secondary education with Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).

Health Care

Oshawa is home to one of the top hospitals in the GTA, which also houses one of the premier cancer centers in the province.  Lakeridge Health Oshawa serves the entire city, and then some and is a relatively short drive no matter which area of the city you live in.

Oshawa wasn’t really thought of as an entertainment mecca, but after the General Motors Centre opened near the end of 2006, that changed.  Aside from being the home of Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, the GM Centre has hosted acts as diverse as Cirque de Soleil, the Harlem Globetrotters, Elton John and more.
Oshawa has always been more than just an “industrial town” and in recent years they really seem to be breaking free of that mold.  Oshawa has a little something for everyone, and if you haven’t checked it out just yet, you may want to add it to your list.
Give us a call anytime and let us know what you’re looking for and we will tell you whether or not one of the Oshawa neighbourhoods is a good fit.  Chances are, at least one of them will be.
